Ilulissat (Summer)

ILULISSAT, THE SAPPHIRE-BLUE TOWN OF ICEBERGS

Just as it name bears the meaning: "Icebergs", Ilulissat is one of the most famous places in Greenland, for viewing and getting up close to majestic and remarkable icebergs.

Besides being the third largest town in Greenland, one will also discover that Ilulissat holds some great historical legends to it.

Ilulissat, also formerly known as: "Jakobshavn", was established and founded in 1721, in regards to the Danish merchant Jakob Severin.

The famous Greenlandic–Danish polar explorer and anthropologist Knud Rasmussen was also born here.

He was the first European to cross the Northwest Passage by dog sledding.

To honor his life and his many adventures on his expeditions, his former house have been made into a museum, named after him which can be visited.

Besides the abundant nature surrounding the town, you have the Ilulissat glacier and icefiord; "Sermeq Kujalleq", in which the icebergs originates from the fastest glacier in the world, moving ice from the Greenland inland ice sheet!

You can experience all this as easy as taking a stroll around the town, by a boat trip or by flighseeing in the air, which each holds their very own unique experiences!

It is no wonder, that the icefiord was enlisted to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, when one get a glimpse of the grand and vigorous, sometimes sapphire-blue like coloured large giants, freely flowing in the great blue ocean.

This is also one of the places up to the far north above the arctic circle in Greenland, where you can get to experience the unique and rare "Midnight Sun" phenomenon during the summer!

Meaning, it is bright with light 24/7 during the summer season here!

During the winter, Ilulissat is another great place to experience a dog sledding adventure with the Greenlandic dogs followed by a dip in the sauna and Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing under the night sky!
